Microsoft has published a blog post in a new “What’s New in Web Experiences” series of posts. The firm says that it will post updates every six weeks – aligning with the stable version of Edge browser’s release. Edge 85 is expected to be offered to users in the stable branch this week. The post not only lists the features that will make it to the Chromium-based offering from Microsoft, but also adds updates from other web-based cross platform offerings.
Jan 10, 2019 5. Word Desktop Line Focus. A popular capability of the Immersive Reader is Line Focus, which allows a focus of 1, 3, or 5 lines of text. Line Focus is coming to Word Desktop, and can be accessed on the View tab, and then clicking Learning Tools – Line Focus.This feature has begun to rollout to Office Insiders, and will slowly be rolling out worldwide to all Office 365 customers.
The first in the list includes improvements coming to the Edge browser. The firm is adding the ability to export Collections items to OneNote directly from the browser via the ‘Send to OneNote’ option. The note-taking app joins other apps such as Excel and Word. The feature has been in testing for a while now. Speaking of Collections, the feature is also available on the mobile versions of the browser. The firm also announced that it is expanding encrypted sync to more education customers for the back to school period.
Another feature being added this month – which is especially geared towards students – is Picture Dictionary in Immersive Reader. The feature serves users with a picture representation of selected words, which the firm says “helps improve comprehension”. It can be turned on from the ‘Reading Preferences’ option in the reader. The built-in PDF reader also brings a new highlighter tool which helps users highlight text in 5 colors. This is in addition to the Read Aloud feature that was added with the last release.
- Translate in Immersive Reader will be available in: Word Online, OneNote Online, OneNote for Windows 10, OneNote iPad, OneNote Mac, Outlook Online, Teams and Flipgrid. Translate will begin rolling out worldwide this week and into next week and you’ll find the list of supported languages here.
- Aug 25, 2020 In somewhat related news, Microsoft also announced general availability today, Aug. 25, of its Immersive Reader service. Immersive Reader is an Azure Cognitive Service designed to help users.
- Immersive Reader is a reading enhancement tool available in Office 365 that will work with Word, OneNote and Outlook. Immersive Reader will speak text in a choice of voices and allows you to view the text in a variety of fonts, sizes and background colours. In Word online and OneNote Immersive reader can be accessed from the View menu.

In addition to the features for the desktop version, the recently launched Family Safety app also lets users enforce browsing limits on their children on mobile devices. The app lets parents block certain features such as InPrivate browsing, enforce restrictions on the sites that can be visited, and view usage reports.
Other updates to the Redmond firm’s services include the introduction of the Math Extension in Teams for students, the ability to donate Bing rewards to parent teacher associations (PTAs), and shopping improvements for Bing search. Microsoft news improvements such as the new live tile for the desktop app, the ability to pin the Weather card in My News, and more were also detailed.
Lastly, in view of the upcoming ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ movie, the company has announced a new coding challenge that can be accessed via a new Edge extension. The firm says that it will also be adding browser themes as the theatrical release gets closer.

Students with Dyslexia benefit from using Microsoft Immersive Reader. It takes text and puts it into a distraction free screen and reads the text to the student. Right Click
Install Immersive Reader For Word
After installing the extension students highlight the text they want read and right click. From the right click choosing “Help me read this” launches the immersive reader.
Click the play icon at the bottom to start the text reading.
Does Not Work in Google Docs
Unfortunately, this Chrome extension does not work in Google Docs. Google Docs has it’s own right click menu that does not include Immersive Reader.
Publish to the Web
To get around this, use the File menu in Google Docs and choose “Publish to the web.” This will give you a publish link that turns your Google Doc into a webpage. The Immersive Reader Chrome extension works with webpages. Share this link with students rather than the traditional Google Docs link so they can use it with Immersive Reader.

Parts of Speech
In addition to reading the text to the student, the parts of speech can be highlighted. Use the sidebar icons to turn on parts of speech color coding.
